Isla's Birth Story

I woke up at 5:15am with my first contraction. Due to previous false labor I barely made a mental note of the time before rolling over and trying to go back to sleep.

However the next two were 4 minutes apart and then dropped to 2 minutes.

I got up, brushed my teeth and made Evan's lunch still able to function through each contraction.

One hit that I had to stop to breath through and I decided to wake Jed up.

I went to into our room to gently wake Jed up only to have him surprise me by throwing his blanket off and jumping up.  He had been awake, waiting for me so he could startle me.

A little after 6am I called the birthing center to tell them that I was in labor. I talked to the midwife on call, Zoe, who told me to meet her there in 30 minutes.

Another contraction hit me that caused a flashback to previous births.  While we waited for Jay to arrive to watch the boys, I sat down on the stairs and started panicking.  I had been praying since I got up and most of my prayers were either, "God please help me." or "God I have faith that you're in control and will get me through whatever I'm about to go through."  I was now saying things like, "I can't do this God, make labor stop because I'm not ready." and "Why are You letting this happen to me?"

Pretty quickly, I realized God wasn't planning on stopping labor so I decided to plead with my husband instead.  I begged him to take me to the hospital instead of birthing center because if I was going to do this I at least needed an epidural.  I was loosing it.  Fortunately Jed was levelheaded enough to refuse.

As a wave of hysteria threatened to overwhelm me, I begged God for strength and peace and immediately the wave subsided.  I knew then that I would endure this pain but that God would get me through it.

Jay came over to take the first babysitting shift with the boys.  Joy would come over later when Jay had to go to work.

We drove to the center, the contractions were way worse when I was sitting down than standing so the drive was torture at times.  I remember calling my mom but not much of what was said and I also remember my husband saying, "Look at all those alligators in the lake this morning."  That's when I told him to shut it, stop looking at the scenery and drive faster.  I wasn't in the best place at that moment.

We arrived at 6:50, I was checked as soon as we got there and was dilated to 5/6. I also found out that Isla was "sunny side up", meaning she was facing my front rather than my back.  This is not the optimum position for labor, apparently it causes back labor and it can slow down the pushing phase.  Although I wasn't noticing much back labor the news was discouraging.

We moved into a birthing room and the bath was started immediately.

I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to get in the bath.  When I finally got in it felt really good but it only lasted a little while.  I had a few really bad, transition type contractions and then my hands began tingling.  It was time to get out.

I really thought I had a long way to go but once I was out of the tub I had a few more contractions while standing up and found myself pushing without realizing it.

Zoe suggested we check my cervix so we did I was complete! However I didn't feel ready to lay down and push, the pain when I was laying was so much worse than when I was standing.  I got up and continued laboring while standing, using Jed to hold onto during each contraction.

I went to the bathroom and before I could stand up another one hit and my water broke well, more like it exploded (I literally jumped and gasped when it happened), into the toilet.  I was pretty excited, I figured I'd start pushing soon and have a baby in the next half hour to an hour.

I still didn't want to lay down so I pushed while standing for the next 2 contractions.  The last one I felt the "ring of fire" as they call it.  I didn't have time to register what that meant as my body began to shake and I suddenly felt like I couldn't stand anymore.  I turned and flopped myself gently onto the bed.

Zoe began to prepare for the baby but I told her that she could relax, I always had to push for a long time.

Then a couple things happened, Zoe was checking for Isla's heartbeat and couldn't find it.  A contraction hit, I heard someone else say, "Should I get oxygen?"  Zoe was telling me that I had to roll over onto my left side  and at the same time was pushing me over.  I told her I needed to push, she told me I needed to wait for the babies sake.

She found the heartbeat and everything calmed down.  I asked if I could push on the next contraction she said yes but we'd have to roll over onto my side again as soon as it was over.  I agreed.

The next contraction hit I pushed and to my complete surprise her head popped out.  I took a tiny breath, pushed again and out came her shoulders.  I heard Jed gasp and felt her tiny warm body on my stomach.

I couldn't believe it!  I just kept thanking God that it was over.

Her umbilical cord was short like Ford's so Jed had to cut it so I could pull her up to my chest.

Unfortunately I didn't get to feed her right away as it was decided that I needed a couple sutures. The trade off for such a fast birth I guess.  The last time I had stitches was over seven years ago with Evan's birth!  It wasn't that bad though, in fact a bit later it was decided that I was borderline bleeding too heavily and as a precaution I was given a shot of pitocin which was way more painful, I think I might have even cussed!

Before heading home we had her newborn exam which by the way she passed with flying colors.  And of course the all important stats;

Weight: 6lbs 8oz
Length: 18 1/2 inches
Born at 8:35am

She's healthy and perfect!

Since this is already a book of an entry I'll write about the boy's reactions to meeting their baby sister in another post.

Ford's Birth Day

Friday, at 9pm contractions started.  It was a very dull soreness in my lower back and abdomen with slight pressure that started coming in waves.  I didnt start timing my contractions until 9:20 though, at that point they were 2-3 minutes apart.

At 9:40 I decided to call my midwife, Michelle, who told me to meet her at the birthing center as soon as I could get there.  Jed called Jay who sent Joseph over immediately so we could leave, while Jay and Jamie packed up stuff in case they'd have to spend the night at our house with the boys.

We arrived at the birthing center around 10:15 and Michelle immediately checked me, I was dilated to 6 and definitely in labor!  I was still able to speak and move through the contractions but they were getting more painful so she started a bath.  I got in and Jed sat on the edge while Michelle went out into another room to do some paperwork and to give us privacy.  As the pain got worse I started using the hypnobirthing breathing method which really helped distract me and gave me a sense of working with my body rather than just focusing on enduring labor.

In between contraction Jed and I chatted and I felt pretty good.  At around 11:10pm I had one contraction that was extremely intense and I felt I just had to get out of the bathtub.  I had a few more contractions standing up before heading to the bed to lay down.  I had remembered that I felt a lot of relief when I laid on my side last time opposed to any other position.  I thought I was going to be laying there for at least another hour or so before I was fully dilated but the very next contraction I felt a lot of pressure and the urge to push.  I told Jed to go get Michelle and he did but later he told me that he thought I was crazy.  She came in and checked me again, I was complete and could start pushing whenever I felt like it.  I was so happy that I had basically skipped the horrible transition phase but I was not looking forward to pushing!

At this point which I think was around 11:30pm, a student midwife, Misti, arrived to help and obviously learn.  It was perfect timing b/c I always seem to need extra help bracing myself while pushing.  I pushed a couple times and finally my water broke which is the first time that happened without intervention!  It was so encouraging when Michelle told Jed to get in position to catch the baby because he was definitely coming in the next couple of pushes.

On a side note, usually at this point I'm so focused on the pain and just getting the baby out that I block everything else out but this time I was surprised how aware I was of what was going on around me, I was even able to talk in between contractions/pushes.  And Michelle was right a few more pushes and Ford arrived, at exactly 11:59pm.  Jed put him up on my belly and then cut his cord.  He was so cute and chubby!

He breastfed almost immediately without any problems so Michelle and Misti cleaned up and left the room to give us time alone.  We chilled out until about 2:30am and then Misti did the newborn exam, he weighed in at 7lbs 3oz and 21 3/4in long.  Not only is he our biggest baby but his length was even shocking to Misti who measured him a second time just to make sure!

We were on our way home with our healthy baby boy at 3:30am.   It was wonderful to sleep in our own bed!  Ford slept all night long and only woke up breifly at 6:30am to poop for the first time.

Welcome to the world little man!

 Sweet boy!

 Proud daddy!

You would think with this being our fourth baby we'd be prepared but we hadnt set up the pack and play at home yet, oops.  We decided to make due with a laundry basket for the night instead of wasting precious sleep time on getting his bed ready.  I thought he looked so cute sleeping in there.

Proud big brothers!

3 Years Ago Today

-I was huge, uncomfortable and depressed about still being pregnant.
-I had been having serious braxton hicks contractions for over a week and had already made one trip to the hospital in false labor.  After that I vowed not to go to the hospital unless my water broke.
-I had to get our house ready for having small group over for dinner and study.
-I was exhausted from not sleeping at night.
-A terrible cold/sinus infection was kicking my butt.
-I desperately wished to go into labor but at the same time dreaded the pain that would go along with that.
-At 4pm I was resting on the couch and watching Oprah (trying to numb my brain) when contractions started.  They were 5 minutes apart but not very strong, (my first trip to the hospital they were 2 minutes apart and stronger) so I decided to ignore them.
-Jed got home from work at 5:30 and I mentioned my contractions to him.  We continued to get ready to have people over.
-At 7pm our small group arrives.  I'm still stubbornly ignoring my contractions even though they are coming faster (4 minutes apart) and slightly stronger (about the same as the night I went to the hospital).
-At 7:30 we were eating dinner and chatting when Jed asked me a question and at the same time a contraction came on, I had to pause to focus through the contraction before I could answer him.  When I looked at him he looked freaked out and immediately told everyone to go home and that we were headed to the hospital.  I tried to argue with him but he insisted and I finally gave in.
-At 7:45 everyone had left, my sister was at our house to watch Evan and we were breaking a lot of traffic laws on our way to the hospital.  The pain with each contraction was stronger but still managable, I breathed and focused through each one.
-We made it to the hospital around 8pm and were immediately rushed up to the maternity floor, they put me in a waiting room where they checked me and I was dialated to 6.  The nurses freaked out, ran me over to a delivery room and assigned two nurses to me to get me all prepped.  One of the nurses was older and was really shakey and wouldnt you know it they gave her the job of putting the IV in me!  It took her like 4 tries to get it in and each one was really painful b/c of all the shaking once the needle was in my arm.
-During my labor with Evan I was induced and the labor came on hard and fast, it felt like I had a charley horse all the way acrossed my belly and through my back.  Even though that hadnt happened yet with this labor I was still terrified of enduring it for any length of time so I begged for an epidural.  Around 9-9:30pm the anesthesiologist arrived and gave me my epidural.  I quickly realized that there were parts of my body that werent actually numb but the nurses didnt listen to me, they told me it was good that it didnt take away all my pain b/c that would help during the pushing stage.  Once I realized they werent going to help me out I just endured the weird feeling of having part of my belly numb and part in pain.
-My water never breaks on its own, at around 11pm my midwife finally showed up to find that I was dialated to 8 and decided to break my water for me.  Thank goodness I didnt wait at home for my water to break!
-11:25 I was dialated to 10 and felt the urge to push.  Pushing was so much easier than last time b/c I wasnt doped up on Stadol (I didnt feel tired and weak) but way more painful b/c the epidural wasnt working.
-11:45 Seth was born!  Again b/c I wasnt all strung out on drugs that they had given me I was really able to enjoy this time.  It was so disappointing with Evan b/c I could barely keep my eyes open.  This time I was on a buzz from all the endorphin and was able to hold and cuddle Seth for a really long time.
I remember being in awe of how chubby his cheeks were and how different that was from his brother b/c at 6lbs 3oz he was a whopping 6oz bigger than Evan at birth.  His eyes were really light blue and he had a darker skin tone than his brother.  I thought that I should be comparing him so much to his brother but I couldnt help it I was just marveling that I could have two kids that could be so very different yet similiar.  As Seth has grown up I've noticed that he is impulsive, affectionate, stubborn, charismatic and kind.  He's such a wonderful part of our family and I'm so thankful that God blessed us with him!

Birth Story, Kane

Saturday morning I woke up around 2:30 with a contraction.  I tried to go back to sleep b/c I had been having contractions in the middle of the night for over a week and nothing ever came of them.  However they started coming ever 5-6 minutes so after a half hour I got out of bed to see if they would stop.  Although they kept coming they werent as strong when I was standing.  I decided to walk around the house for a little bit and by 3:30 they started to get stronger, my back started aching and they were closer together (3 minutes apart) but I still wasnt convinced this was it.
At 4am I finally woke Jed up b/c I thought we might want to get things ready to go, just in case.  I was expecting the pain to get a lot worse before we would have to head to the birthing center but by 4:30 my contractions were only a minute apart so we decided to call my midwife.  She told us to meet her at the birthing center as soon as possible so I woke my mom up to tell her what was going on and we left.  On the drive over I remember telling Jed that I was sure that any second everything would stop and we'd have to go back home. I was watching the clock really closely and if my contractions werent exactly 1 minute apart I would start freaking out until one came.  As we got closer each contraction became more and more painful and I started having to really focus through them, thats when I stopped worrying.  We got to the birthing center at 5am and my midwife checked me, I was dialated to 6cm so she suggested that I get in the tub.  The tub was great!  It really helped me relax in between each contraction.  Jed sat on the side holding my hand through each one and trying to keep me distracted in between.   At 6:30 I went into the "transition stage" of labor.  This is by far the worst part of labor but fortunately it seems to be the shortest.  I couldnt get comfortable during this part so I desperately wanted to move around but I couldnt b/c I was extremely weak and shaky.  I ended up laying in bed for the most part.  I told my midwife at about 7am that I felt a lot of pressure so she checked me again and I was dialated to a 9 but my water wasnt broken.  After trying a couple different positions and pushing to break my water naturally she ended up having to do it.  I immediately felt the urge to push, it gave me great relief during the contractions and after forty minutes Kane was born.  Jed was able to "catch" him and they put him right on my belly.  The cord was so short that they had to cut it immediately so I could pull him up to me.  It took a few minutes for the shakiness to go away but as soon as it did I was able to start breast feeding.  Everything after that is a little foggy.  We chilled out in bed for a while and at some point Jed went out to get breakfast from McDonalds.  At 10:30am my midwife did Kane's newborn exam and we packed up to head home.  I wont lie, I was really sore but I couldnt wait to get home and get in my own bed!  When we got home Evan and Seth were so excited to see Kane.  They would get as close as they could to Kane and yell, "Hi, baby Kane!"  They love to touch him, give him kisses and Evan constantly begs to hold him.  My mom has been doing a great job keeping the boys distracted while I've been recovering and taking care of Kane.   Both Jed and I have noticed a huge difference in spending the first few days recovering at home opposed to a hospital.  We actually got to sleep at night rather than have nurses and other people barging into our room.  I think its also taken a huge emotional stress off of me b/c I can be with my whole family rather than feeling held hostage in the hospital.  So if I had to do it again I would definitely chose the birthing center, just in case you were wondering. :)  Also if you were curious here's the website to the birthing center we went to, http://www.h2hbirthcenter.com/.   They have pictures of the room Kane was born in, the The Midwife Martha Ballard Memorial Birth Room.

Kane's Birth Day

As we got closer each contraction became more and more painful and I started having to really focus through them, that's when I finally stopped worrying.

We got to the birthing center at 5am and my midwife checked me, I was dilated to 6cm so she suggested that I get in the tub.

told my midwife at about 7am that I felt a lot of pressure so she checked me again and I was dilated to a 9 but my water wasnt broken.  After trying a couple different positions and pushing to break my water naturally she ended up having to do it.  I immediately felt the urge to push, it gave me great relief during the contractions and after forty minutes Kane was born.

Jed was able to "catch" him and they put him right on my belly.  The cord was so short that they had to cut it just so I could pull him up to me.

Isn't he precious?!

Evan loves to hold his little brother.

We bought a birthday cake for Kane.
